大学入試の日程も近づいてきましたね。
受験生の皆さんは、過去問に取り組んでいる日々ではないでしょうか？
赤本を買ったのに英語の答えだけしか載っていない…なんてこともありますよね！
生徒と一緒に解いたので、せっかくなので全訳を作成してみました。以下に掲載します。

サラ: Hi David. It’s good to be back on campus, isn’t it? How was your winter break?
サラ: こんにちは、デビッド。キャンパスに戻ってきて嬉しいよね？冬休みはどうだった？
デビッド: It was OK. I mostly worked to earn some pocket money for this semester. How about you?
デビッド: まあまあだったよ。今学期のための小遣いを稼ぐためにほとんどバイトしてたんだ。サラは？
サラ: I spent my entire vacation doing research for my graduation thesis.
サラ: 私は卒業論文の研究をするのに休み中ずっと費やしてたよ。
デビッド: At least you were productive. What is your paper about?
デビッド: 少なくとも生産的だったんだね。論文のテーマは何？
サラ: I am writing about the discovery of umami.
サラ: うま味の発見について書いてる。
デビッド: Umami? What’s that?
デビッド: うま味？それって何？
サラ: I am actually surprised you don’t know because it has been a big trend in American food culture for the past couple of decades. There is even a hamburger chain called Umami Burger.
サラ: アメリカの食文化で過去数十年にわたって大きなトレンドになっているから、知らないって聞いて驚いたよ。「Umami Burger」っていうハンバーガーチェーンもあるんだよ。
デビッド: Oh! I have heard of that. I thought it was just a Japanese name.
デビッド: おお、それなら聞いたことある！ただの日本語の名前だと思ってたよ。
サラ: No, there is a long, interesting story behind the word “umami.”
サラ: 違うのよ。「うま味」という言葉には長くて面白い物語があるの。
デビッド: Well, now you’ve got me interested. Let’s grab a coffee and you can tell me about it.
デビッド: それなら興味が湧いてきたよ。コーヒーでも飲みながら話してくれる？
サラ: The story actually goes back over a century ago to a Japanese professor named Kikunae Ikeda, who was born in 1864. Evidently, he was very interested in Japanese soup stock, what we call “dashi.”
サラ: この話は実は100年以上前にさかのぼるの。1864年生まれの日本の教授、池田菊苗という人が「だし」にすごく興味を持っていたのよ。
デビッド: Isn’t that the soup base for ramen that I love so much?
デビッド: それって、僕が大好きなラーメンのスープのベースのこと？
サラ: Exactly, but also for miso soup, sukiyaki, and lots of other dishes.
サラ: その通り。でも、味噌汁、すき焼き、他にもいろんな料理に使われるの。
